The University of Jos, or as popularly called Unijos is located in Jos, Plateau State, central Nigeria, is a federal university.

In November 1971, the University of Jos was founded from a satellite campus of the University of Ibadan. Students were admitted as pre-degree students in January 1972, and the first Bachelor of Arts degree program began in October 1973. The Unijos was founded as a separate entity in October 1975 by the then-military administration of General Murtala Mohammed. Professor Gilbert Onuaguluchi was the first Vice-Chancellor of Unijos. In October 1976, 575 students enrolled in the newly reformed University of Jos, which was divided into four faculties: Arts and Social Sciences, Education, Natural Sciences, and Medical Sciences. Post-graduate programs were added in 1977. By 1978, the Faculties of Law and Environmental Sciences had been formed, and the Arts and Social Sciences had been split.
