History of the University
Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife was one of three universities established in Nigeria between 1961 and 1962 as a result of a report submitted to the Federal Government in September 1960 by a Commission appointed in April 1959 under the Chairmanship of Sir Eric Ashby, Master of Clare College, Cambridge, to survey the needs of post-secondary and higher education in Nigeria over the next twenty years. Under the chairmanship of Chief Rotimi Williams, the law establishing the Provisional Council of the University was formally launched on June 8, 1961.
The Government of the Western State issued an edict known as the University of Ife decree, 1970 on June 11, 1970, to replace the Provisional Council Law of June 8, 1961. The Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife (Amended) Edict No. 112 of 1975 (Transitional Provisions) Decree No. 112 of 1975 (Transitional Provisions) Decree No. 112 of 1975 (Transitional Provisions) Decree No. 112 of 1975 (Transitional Provisions) Decree No. 112 of 1975 (Transitional Provisions) Decree No
23rd of March, 1975. This new Decree resulted in the Federal Military Government taking control of Obafemi Awolowo University and establishing a Provisional Council as an interim governing body of the university, which will control the policies and finances of the university and manage its affairs under the general direction of the Head of the Federal Government. A Governing Council has since succeeded the Provisional Council.
Agriculture, Arts, Economics and Social Studies (now Social Sciences), Law, and Science were the first five faculties established at the university. Since then, six new faculties have been added: the Faculty of Education (founded on October 1, 1967), the Faculty of Pharmacy (founded on October 1, 1969), the Faculties of Technology and Health Sciences (now College of Health Sciences) (both founded on October 1, 1960), the Faculty of Administration (founded on October 1, 1979), and the Faculty of Environmental Design and Management (founded on October 1, 1980). (established on April 6, 1982).
The University developed a five-college collegiate system in 1992. After two years, the system was abandoned due to its ineffectiveness. The Postgraduate College and the College of Health Sciences, on the other hand, were kept. The Faculties of Basic Medical Sciences, Clinical Sciences, and Dentistry are now part of the College of Health Sciences.
